NASCAR President Steve Phelps Speaks On Kevin Harvick’s Crash On His Happy Hour Podcast ‘I think that..

NASCAR ‘lost millions and millions of dollars in crash’ at LA Coliseum

As NASCAR turns the page on the Race at the LA Coliseum, there’s more to be said about the state of the sport’s financial system. Los Angeles doesn’t have a plan for 2025.

The NASCAR Cup Series has been run at the LA Coliseum for the past three years. The season opener at the legendary stadium is a test of NASCAR’s ability to compete anywhere, anytime. After the Michigan race a few weeks ago, NASCAR president Steve Phelps discussed Kevin Harvick’s crash on his Happy Hour podcast.

“I think that … It’s something you have to do to scale up, right? So there’s a cost associated with those and [analysis] over time. Because millions and millions are lost dollars on The Clash. But this is a big deal. It’s important to our friends at FOX, and I think it’s important to start the season right. It’s unique, different, and people think differently about the sport. And when I say that, I’m not talking about the people in the games, the shareholders, or the long-time fans.

“There are those who are on the sidelines or don’t see NASCAR as part of their part of the sport. And I think that’s important for us. And that’s going to be different with Bowman Gray, which is that you have the fan base that we have now and the different things that we’ve done, the Netflix shows and the different episodes. You have this huge new fan base here, and they look at these crazy, historical stories in Crazy and the documentary and everyone goes, “Oh, that’s crazy.” I think that’s a good thing, and I’m doing it.”

Kevin Harvick had some good comments during his presentation. The NASCAR Clash is an epic race. Also thanks to Steve Phelps. It is important to admit that you have lost a lot of money at an event. But he has a very good point.

NASCAR invests for the long term. New fans and old fans, and turning new fans into old fans. Time will tell how this plan pans out.
