Jerry Jones seems ready to shift his focus from contract talks to the Dallas Cowboys’ season opener. After spending the offseason addressing contract extensions, Jones, who heads the Cowboys, is now fielding questions about Dak Prescott’s contract as the team gears up for Week 1 against the Cleveland Browns.
Prescott, the 2023 NFL MVP runner-up, enters the season with minimal security beyond this year, and it doesn’t look like that will change soon—at least not publicly, as Jones has been tight-lipped with the media.
Along with Prescott’s uncertain future, the Cowboys have yet to extend head coach Mike McCarthy’s contract. Jones, while firm in his stance, praised McCarthy’s efforts, expressing satisfaction with the work he and the team have done.
However, despite his contentment with the team’s regular-season performance, Jones remains frustrated with their playoff shortcomings.
Jones believes that the pressure of job insecurity can be a motivator, though it may backfire, as it has in past dealings with Prescott. Prescott, on track to become the highest-paid player in the NFL, cannot be franchise tagged this offseason due to a clause in his current deal.
This could lead to a fierce bidding war, leaving Jones to wonder if he should have engaged in more discussions before the season began.
