Rams All-Pro Delivers Strong 6-Word Message to Lions Rookie Terrion Arnold After Breakout Game
Detroit Lions rookie cornerback Terrion Arnold received a powerful message from Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Cooper Kupp after their Week 1 clash. Despite some early struggles, Arnold took away valuable lessons from his NFL debut.
A first-round pick, Arnold experienced both highs and lows during his matchup against the Rams on September 8. The 21-year-old made several impressive plays but also committed two costly pass interference penalties.
However, these mistakes provided learning opportunities, especially since Arnold was often matched up with the 2021 All-Pro receiver, Kupp. After the game, Kupp acknowledged Arnold’s talent, offering words of encouragement.
Reflecting on the moment, Arnold shared with reporters, “Cooper Kupp is a great player. Guarding him — even after the game, [I went] up to him, and he said, ‘Yeah, you one of those ones.’”
Kupp, who dominated the second half and helped the Rams secure 17 consecutive points, finished with 14 receptions for 110 yards and a touchdown. Despite this, Kupp left the field with respect for Arnold, who recorded 8 solo tackles, ranking third on the Lions’ defense.
Arnold’s Penalty Struggles
The Rams capitalized on Arnold’s two pass interference penalties, converting them into two touchdowns and a field goal on three straight drives in the second half.
The first foul occurred late in the third quarter, as Arnold defended Kupp on third-and-6 at the Lions’ 11-yard line. Arnold had briefly left the game due to an injury but returned just in time for the penalty, which advanced the Rams to the 2-yard line.
The second infraction came on a pass from Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford into the end zone from the Lions’ 18-yard line, bringing the Rams to the 1-yard line. While these penalties stung, the Lions’ defense managed to limit the damage to a field goal.
Arnold, disappointed in himself, admitted, “I hold myself to a high standard, so I felt like those hurt our team a little. But I take full accountability. I’m going to get back to the drawing board and get better.”
Coach Dan Campbell’s Perspective
Lions head coach Dan Campbell addressed Arnold’s penalties in his postgame comments. While acknowledging the impact, Campbell didn’t seem too concerned. He planned to review the game film but emphasized the importance of maintaining Arnold’s aggressive style of play.
“I didn’t feel like it was blatant or like he was out of position,” Campbell said. “I don’t want to take away his edge. I want him to play aggressively, and I thought he did a lot of good things today. The game certainly wasn’t too big for him. He stepped up.”
Arnold’s Playing Time and Role
Arnold played 76 out of Detroit’s 78 defensive snaps, only briefly exiting due to injury. Veteran cornerback Carlton Davis was the only Lions outside cornerback with more snaps, while linebacker Alex Anzalone and slot corner Brian Branch played the most defensive snaps overall.
Despite his mistakes, Arnold’s performance revealed potential. His willingness to learn and a positive attitude, especially after receiving support from Kupp, suggest he could develop into a key player for the Lions in the future.
