New Update: Detroit Lions added Former Raiders Star to Active Roster and signing two players to the practice squad
The Detroit Lions made several roster moves on Wednesday, promoting nose tackle Kyle Peko to the active roster and signing two players to their practice squad.
The Lions announced the promotion of veteran nose tackle Kyle Peko to their active roster, while also re-signing defensive tackle Chris Smith, who was released earlier in the week, to the practice squad. In addition, the team confirmed the addition of kicker Greg Joseph to the practice squad, a move that had been anticipated.
Peko, who served as the Lions’ starting nose tackle throughout most of training camp while DJ Reader was on the PUP list, played 47% of the defensive snaps in the Week 1 matchup against the Rams. Although Reader is expected to return to action this week, the Lions may ease him back into the lineup, given his recovery from a long-term injury. This could result in Peko seeing significant playing time in Week 2 and potentially in future games.
Furthermore, Peko’s status as an NFL veteran meant that if he had been signed to the Week 1 roster, his contract would have been guaranteed for the entire season. By signing him in Week 2, the Lions gain the flexibility of a standard contract, allowing them to re-evaluate the defensive line when second-year tackle Brodric Martin is eligible to return from injured reserve during the team’s Week 5 bye.
Smith, praised by head coach Dan Campbell for his consistent improvement, re-joins the practice squad with three elevations available for future games, offering depth as necessary.
Lions general manager Brad Holmes had previously indicated that the team would bring in a veteran kicker to the practice squad during the season, a need now fulfilled by Joseph’s signing.
