Cardinals coach Jonathan Gannon can’t keep up with Lions’ Dan Campbell … at least when it comes to coffee

It might have been pure coincidence that Arizona Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon kicked off his lively Friday press conference by talking about coffee.

“It’s Friday. Always big energy,” Gannon said as he quickly entered the room. “You know what we should do one day? You guys should come up to my office and rip espressos with me.

“I’ve got a good machine. My wife hooked me up. Real beans, grinds real beans.”

Whether Gannon can outcoach the equally enthusiastic Dan Campbell in their Week 3 matchup is yet to be seen, but it’s clear that he can’t outdo the Detroit Lions head coach when it comes to caffeine consumption.

Gannon admitted he usually sticks to “just one” espresso made from real beans, which seems like a healthy habit compared to Campbell’s routine.

If you haven’t heard about Campbell’s caffeine intake during his first year in 2021, the man starts his day with more than just a single shot of espresso.

“I’ll get two Venti — you know, Starbucks — two Venti of Pike (Place roast), with two shots in ’em,” Campbell said during his first training camp. “So, a Black Eye in both. That’s how I start my day.”

For those unfamiliar, a Venti is the second-largest size at Starbucks, holding 20 oz. for hot drinks and 24 oz. for cold. A Black Eye is a dark coffee with two shots of espresso.

But Campbell doesn’t stop there. The double Ventis with double shots are just the beginning.

“I’ll drink throughout the day,” Campbell said last year. “After that, maybe an hour later, I’ll go … it’s just endless amounts of coffee throughout the day. Somebody’s just going to find me on the floor.”

Let’s hope it never comes to that.
