Ricky Stenhouse Jr. earned his first win of the season at Talladega Superspeedway, where William Byron became the first driver to advance to the third round of the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs. Although Stenhouse edged Brad Keselowski by 0.006 seconds (tied for the seventh-closest margin of victory in NASA Cup Series history), Bryon had his fourth consecutive top-10 finish at Talladega (longest streak in the series) .
Byron moved from ninth to the lead with 74 points, becoming the first of 12 playoff drivers to secure one of the eight spots in the third round. The third-round outlook is good for third seed Kyle Larson (#52 above the pack) and sixth seed Christopher Bell (plus-57 above the pack).
