Former Green Bay Packers quarterbacks coach Luke Getsy is on track to rejoin the Packers’ coaching staff, according to ESPN’s Rob Demovsky.
Demovsky reported Friday that the Packers are “expected to land Getsy back on their coaching staff in some capacity.” Getsy, who last served as Green Bay’s quarterbacks coach in 2021, could be a candidate for the vacant quarterbacks coach position following Tom Clements’ retirement after the 2024 season. Additionally, the offensive coordinator role may also become available.
Packers Coaching Staff Openings
The Packers currently have a clear vacancy at quarterbacks coach, a role Getsy previously held before departing in 2022. Clements, who returned to Green Bay that same year to mentor Jordan Love, is stepping away after helping Love successfully transition into the starting quarterback role.
There is also a possibility that Getsy could fill a larger role within the coaching staff. Offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich has drawn outside interest, including an interview with the Chicago Bears for their head coaching position. While the Bears ultimately hired Ben Johnson, Stenavich was also linked to the Houston Texans’ offensive coordinator opening. Should Stenavich accept a position elsewhere, the Packers’ offensive coordinator role would need to be filled.
With most NFL teams nearing the end of their head coaching searches, the league is expected to see a wave of coordinator hires soon. Packers head coach Matt LaFleur has stated previously that he would not block non-play-calling coordinators from pursuing roles with play-calling responsibilities, suggesting that Stenavich could depart if the right opportunity arises.
Getsy’s History with the Packers
A return to Green Bay would mark Getsy’s second stint on LaFleur’s staff. When former offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett left to become the Denver Broncos head coach in 2022, LaFleur initially targeted Getsy as his replacement. However, Getsy chose to become the offensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears, where he held play-calling responsibilities. LaFleur ultimately promoted Adam Stenavich from offensive line coach to offensive coordinator.
After spending two seasons as the Bears’ offensive coordinator, Getsy joined the Las Vegas Raiders in the same capacity in 2024. However, after being let go midseason, Getsy returned to Green Bay as a defensive consultant, assisting the Packers’ defensive staff by analyzing opposing offenses.
If the Packers hire Getsy as their offensive coordinator, his role would differ significantly from his previous play-calling positions in Chicago and Las Vegas. In Green Bay, LaFleur handles play-calling, leaving the offensive coordinator to focus on game planning, running meetings, and managing administrative duties.
Green Bay’s Quarterback Coaching Options
Should Getsy take on the offensive coordinator role, the Packers would need to address the quarterbacks coach vacancy. Internal candidates for the position include Sean Mannion, a former quarterback for LaFleur and current offensive assistant, as well as Connor Lewis, the team’s assistant quarterbacks coach.
The Packers have also interviewed external candidates, including New England Patriots quarterbacks coach Ashton Grant.
Getsy’s familiarity with LaFleur’s system and his history with the organization make him a strong candidate for a significant role as Green Bay prepares for the 2025 season.
