Racing Mourns Delta Work: A Champion’s Legacy Lives On

Feb 20, 2025 #Delta work, #Gordon Elliot

After a bout of colic, the three-time Cheltenham winner and runner-up at the Grand National last year died at the age of twelve. During the 2018 Pertemps Final at Cheltenham, Delta Work experienced triumph for the first time. Then, in 2022, he famously defeated Tiger Roll in the Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase, and the following year, he won the title again. Delta Work won the Savills Chase, the Irish Gold Cup, and five Grade 1s over fences prior to entering the cross-country circuit. “Unfortunately, Delta Work passed away this morning due to colic,” stated trainer Gordon Elliot.

“He was taken to Fethard Equine Hospital after exhibiting symptoms of colic, where he had surgery, but regrettably, nothing could be done to help him. “This news breaks the hearts of everyone here. He was the yard’s greatest favorite and provided us with countless special days throughout the years. As a triple Cheltenham Festival winner and five-time Grade 1 winner, he was the epitome of what a racehorse should be. “It was an honour and privilege to train him for Michael and Anita O’Leary and we will be lucky to come across a horse of such class, versatility and longevity again.”
