Following an altercation with police, officials issued Busch a citation for careless driving, causing him to drive at 60 mph in a 45 mph zone. They pulled him out of the season’s last two races, which signaled the abrupt end of his Roush career. According to Greg Biffle, Busch’s attitude during the incident played a key influence in Roush’s decision. Biffle recounted, “They stopped him, and I think he was a real a–hole to the cops, even though he didn’t get a DUI.” According to reports at the time, Busch said things like, “Do you know who I am?” His reputation was harmed by the episode, which also provided Roush with an excuse to split from him.
