One of NASCAR’s most successful drivers, Greg Biffle, has said that losing the Cup Series title to Tony Stewart still “eats at him” after thinking back on the 2005 campaign. Speaking to Dale Earnhardt Jr., he revealed the information. For NASCAR fans, the 2005 NASCAR Nextel Cup Series was an entertaining season. The series featured an exciting duel between NASCAR legend Greg Biffle and Tony Stewart, who is valued around $90 million (per celebritynetworth.com). Stewart led the standings with 3,716 points before the Chase started, 209 points ahead of Biffle. However, the Chase Reset system reset the points for the top 10 drivers, reducing the difference to just five points before to the playoffs. Additionally, Biffle had had the advantage of having six wins during the season compared to the NASCAR legend’s five wins.
Stewart managed to hold onto his position in the final standings in spite of this. With 6,533 points, Stewart, who was driving the #20 for Joe Gibbs Racing, won his second Cup Series. With 6,498 points at the end of the season, Biffle, who was driving the #16 for Roush Racing, came in second. Stewart simply needed to finish in a position of 15 or higher to win the title, but Biffle won the final. Greg Biffle expressed his complete disappointment at giving up the title to Tony Stewart to Dale Earnhardt Jr. on his podcast, Dale Download Jr.: “We were three spots behind in the title. Obviously, out of all I’ve done in my career. “That bothers me,” Biffle stated during the show.
Citing the problems he encountered after being placed a lap down due to a loose tire, Biffle felt he was extremely unlucky. At Texas, we had a wheel loose, and I was in third place. And I had to descend again to replace the tire and change the wheel. Every time the leaders passed someone, the caution came out, and we were in the lucky dog position after getting a lap down,” Biffle said. The deck was stacked against us a bit, and our right-side guy left the wheel free. I won’t claim NASCAR had anything to do with that, but perhaps someone had. So we were done, on the 20th, we went and ran a good run at Phoenix and won at Homestead. And I was less than 20 car lengths from lapping Tony Stewart,” he added.
The #16 driver stated that he would have been the 2005 Nextel Cup Series if he had won more races and that he only needed to move up three spots to match the points. “He was in that same spot. I’m literally foaming at the mouth. Be careful, debris. Oh, you know, I think. What location is it? This bull is where? Yes. In any event, I prevailed that day. I would have received the title if I had held three additional positions, he added. Stewart, also referred to as “Smoke,” is one of the most skilled and adaptable drivers in motorsport. Stewart was born in Columbus, Indiana, and has competed in go-karts and NASCAR. Three Cup Series titles were won by him in 2002, 2005, and 2011.
