Key X-Factors for Browns vs. Cowboys: Browns RB Controlling Tempo, Cowboys WR Stretching the Field, and Defensive Playmakers on Both Sides

Yesterday marked the end of another practice for the Cleveland Browns as they continue working on their left tackle lineup. After practicing the previous day, Jedrick Wills did not participate this time.

Although no official decision has been made, it’s expected that Wills won’t be the starter. All signs point to Jack Conklin taking on the role. While left tackle remains a key piece of the Browns’ offensive puzzle, other factors could also have a significant impact.

Browns Season Preview & Predictions

A pressing question is: who will emerge as key players on both sides of the ball?

For the Browns’ defense, a potential threat could come from KaVontae Turpin of the Dallas Cowboys. Though not necessarily the Cowboys’ top pick, Turpin is poised for a larger role in their offense. Rumors from Cowboys camp suggest that he was rested throughout the preseason, a sign that he may feature prominently in their plans. Turpin has been utilized in jet sweeps, motion plays, and even carried the ball out of the backfield. Considering the Browns’ struggles to contain the edges last season, Turpin could be a major headache for defensive coordinators.

The Browns’ defense, known for its aggressive approach, had a notable weakness last year, especially in preseason games. Turpin, with his speed and playmaking ability, also doubles as the Cowboys’ primary return specialist, making him a player to watch closely.

While Dallas has its stars—defensive end Micah Parsons as a game-wrecker and cornerback Trevon Diggs as a shutdown presence in coverage—their linebackers could be the difference in this matchup. The Browns need to keep an eye on DeMarvion Overshown, a linebacker who’s likely to see significant snaps. His quickness and sideline-to-sideline range make him a real threat in tracking down Deshaun Watson when plays break down.

Defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer is known for bringing pressure through his linebackers, and Overshown could be key to that strategy. Watson and the Browns’ offense will need to rely on RPOs (run-pass options) to neutralize that pressure and gain an advantage.

Ultimately, Turpin and Overshown are two players who could shape Sunday’s game. If the Browns play disciplined, assignment-focused football, they stand a better chance of keeping both players in check.
