Troy Aikman on Monday shared his thoughts on Mike McCarthy, potentially sending a message to Jerry Jones in the process.
During the second quarter of the “Monday Night Football” game between the Baltimore Ravens and Los Angeles Chargers, Aikman and announcer Joe Buck discussed the Cowboys’ victory over the Washington Commanders. Dallas secured a 34-26 win in a game with a chaotic finish.
Aikman used the opportunity to commend McCarthy for the win.
“It was impressive against a team that’s right in the hunt. And I’ve said it … Mike McCarthy’s a hell of a football coach,” Aikman remarked.
The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback offered a strong endorsement of the team’s current head coach.
Now in his fifth season with the Cowboys, McCarthy is in the final year of his contract. While he achieved a 12-5 record for three straight seasons, all ended with playoff disappointments. The team’s 4-7 record this season has led many to believe McCarthy’s tenure could be coming to an end. Aikman himself said last week that he thought it was unlikely McCarthy would return.
Perhaps Aikman’s comments are a subtle message to team owner Jerry Jones about how the situation should be addressed.
