The Cowboys’ interest in a potential trade for Davante Adams seems minimal.
If the Cowboys are looking to address gaps on their roster, they have plenty of areas to focus on. The defensive line has struggled, the linebackers need more depth, the secondary has been plagued by injuries, and the running back corps ranks at the bottom of the NFL. There are no shortage of issues to resolve.
However, the team does boast a star wide receiver—CeeDee Lamb, who started the season slowly after holding out for a new contract for most of the offseason. Lamb has signed and started playing better, establishing himself as one of the top three receivers in the league when at his best.
Despite this, with Raiders star receiver Davante Adams reportedly on the trade block, rumors have circulated about the Cowboys potentially acquiring him. The Raiders are reportedly asking for a second-round pick and additional compensation for Adams. The Cowboys could make that deal work, possibly by packaging the pick with quarterback Trey Lance, who could fill the Raiders’ need for a developmental QB.
However, Conflicting reports about the Cowboys’ interest have emerged.
Cowboys ‘Monitoring’ the Trade Market According to Dianna Russini of The Athletic, the Cowboys are “monitoring” the situation involving Adams.
As Russini tweeted on Tuesday:
“The Jets and Cowboys are among the many teams monitoring the Davante Adams situation. Both have checked in with the Raiders. I’m told at this point that Vegas is in no rush to make a move until a team reaches their asking price — but Adams wants out ASAP.”
This isn’t surprising. Adams is a three-time All-Pro receiver and likely future Hall of Famer. At 31, he’s eager to play in a Super Bowl, something he hasn’t accomplished in his stellar career. Naturally, the Cowboys would be monitoring the situation, as would many teams around the league.
If the Raiders’ asking price dropped to something like a fourth-round pick, most teams would likely be interested in acquiring Adams.
Dallas Has ‘No Intention’ of Pursuing Adams On the local side, however, there are reports from the Dallas Morning News suggesting the Cowboys have no interest in pursuing Adams.
According to insider David Moore, “It’s evident that any star player seeking a trade or entering free agency will inevitably be linked to the Cowboys. Jerry Jones wouldn’t have it any other way. It’s part of the brand.”
“But very few of these speculative connections come to fruition. Adams is just the latest player to be linked with the Cowboys. Don’t get your hopes up. The team has no intention of participating in the Adams sweepstakes, according to a source familiar with the Cowboys’ thinking.”
Adams, for his part, reportedly prefers a reunion with one of his former quarterbacks—either Derek Carr, now with the Saints, or Aaron Rodgers of the Jets.
As reported by ESPN, “Two NFL teams high on Davante Adams’ preferred destinations if he’s traded — if not at the very top — are the New York Jets and New Orleans Saints, according to league sources.”
