NFL Analyst Brock Vierra: Rams Land Panthers’ No. 1 Overall Pick in a Trade proposal Amidst Ex-Lions QB Speculations

Former Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford, now with the Los Angeles Rams, has had a successful run since joining the team in 2021, including winning a Super Bowl in his first year.

However, at 36 years old and with the Rams off to a 1-3 start in the 2024 season, discussions are emerging about who could eventually succeed Stafford. One potential candidate is a former No. 1 overall pick who could be groomed as Stafford’s successor.

Benched QB Could Be Part of Matthew Stafford’s Succession Plan

Bryce Young, the former Alabama star and No. 1 overall pick by the Carolina Panthers, has struggled this season and has been benched. There’s growing speculation that Young could benefit from a fresh start, and some believe the Rams could be an ideal fit. NFL Analyst Brock Vierra recently suggested in a piece for USA Today’s Rams Wire that Los Angeles would be a great place for Young to rebuild his career. As a Pasadena native and former standout at Mater Dei High School, Young has deep roots in the area.

Vierra argues that the Rams shouldn’t give up more than a fourth-round pick for Young but believes the young quarterback would thrive in their system. The Rams’ offense, similar to what Young ran at Alabama, along with the presence of top-tier offensive minds, could provide Young with the support and development he needs. In Los Angeles, Young could serve as Stafford’s backup, growing in a low-pressure environment until called upon.

Another Option for the Rams

NFL analyst Kristopher Knox, writing for Bleacher Report, also sees Bryce Young as a potential successor to Stafford. Knox draws parallels to when the Rams took a chance on Baker Mayfield a few years ago.

However, Knox also suggests Denver Broncos backup quarterback Zach Wilson as another possibility. Despite his inconsistent play, Wilson has started 33 games in the NFL and, at 25 years old, could serve as a bridge quarterback with more long-term potential.

Knox mentions that Wilson could appeal to several teams, including the Rams, as part of a long-term succession plan for Stafford. Both quarterbacks offer intriguing possibilities as the Rams look toward the future.
