In a dominant 52-14 victory over the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, Detroit Lions wide receiver Kalif Raymond carved out a unique place in NFL history.
Raymond delivered major contributions on both offense and special teams, returning a punt for a 90-yard touchdown and catching a touchdown pass from quarterback Jared Goff.
As reported by Jeff Risdon of USA Today’s Lions Wire, Raymond became the first player ever to record both a punt return touchdown and a touchdown reception in the same game.
Reflecting on his performance, Raymond shared that he felt prepared for the moment.
“I’ve been waiting for that feeling for so long,” Raymond told reporters. “It’s kind of surreal, like, ‘Oh, it’s really happening—don’t mess up.’ But with teammates like that – I’ve been saying it for the past half hour – having defensive guys who’ll play three snaps, force a punt, and then go block on special teams, it’s incredible.”
Raymond’s Game-Breaking Performance Earns Him the Game Ball
Raymond’s two touchdowns highlighted a big day for the Lions as they cruised past the Titans. His 90-yard punt return opened the scoring for the second half, followed by a six-yard touchdown reception from Goff six minutes later.
After the game, Lions head coach Dan Campbell awarded Raymond the game ball, recalling how he and general manager Brad Holmes first noticed Raymond’s potential as he was set to enter free agency with the Titans.
“I told the team, you know, (Kalif) ‘Leaf’ (Raymond) got the game ball, and I shared the story of Brad (Holmes) coming into my office in 2021,” Campbell said. “We were just starting out here, and Brad said, ‘Hey, check out this guy from Tennessee. Mostly a returner, kind of a gadget player. Think he could fit on offense?’ I watched a few plays and said, ‘Absolutely. I’d take him in a heartbeat.’ It’s been a blessing to have him here ever since.”
Campbell praised Raymond’s professionalism and adaptability, noting his reliability and his ability to contribute in multiple roles.
Room for Growth Despite the Win
Though the Lions cruised to a decisive win, Campbell acknowledged that there was still work to be done, particularly in the passing game. However, he was quick to emphasize how the strength of the special teams helped make up for it.
“When we play, we rely on three phases here, and if a couple are in sync, they can carry the third. And when all three are on, we’re hard to beat,” Campbell explained. “I like where we are. That’s win number six, and it’s a great setup as we head to Lambeau this week. I’m already excited, and I know the team is too. That’s a solid win.”
