The Detroit Lions’ defense has been hit hard by injuries, leaving coordinator Aaron Glenn without several key contributors through the first 14 games of the season.
Defensive ends Aidan Hutchinson and Marcus Davenport, defensive tackle Alim McNeill, linebackers Alex Anzalone and Derrick Barnes, and cornerback Carlton Davis are all currently on injured reserve.
As a result, the Lions have been forced to adjust by utilizing a variety of replacements. Speaking on Thursday, Glenn acknowledged that the situation has been challenging.
However, Glenn emphasized that his frustration isn’t personal. Instead, it comes from seeing promising seasons for several players derailed by injuries.
“When you lose players like that, it always hurts. I’m not going to sit here and say it’s not frustrating when these things happen. But the way I think about it is probably different from how others see it,” Glenn said. “I’m frustrated for them because of the seasons those guys were having. I always look at it from the players’ perspective.”
Using Hutchinson as an example, Glenn elaborated on how impactful the injuries have been.
“I was talking to someone this morning. Take Hutch, for example. I think Hutch had almost eight sacks, and the league leader has 12 sacks. You can just imagine what he’d be doing if he were still here,” Glenn explained. “So that’s where my frustration comes from—what the players have accomplished and what they could have achieved as the season progressed.”
