The Detroit Lions are navigating a crucial point in their season, boasting an impressive 12-2 record despite significant injuries to key players.
One of the biggest losses is running back David Montgomery, who suffered a season-ending MCL injury during the Lions’ 48-42 defeat to the Buffalo Bills. Montgomery’s absence leaves a major gap in Detroit’s offense, but teammate Jahmyr Gibbs recently shared a heartfelt message Montgomery gave him, as the Lions aim to stay on course for the playoffs.
Montgomery, who contributed 775 rushing yards, 341 receiving yards, and 12 total touchdowns this season, was instrumental to the Lions’ success. His physical style of play and leadership fueled Detroit’s 11-game winning streak, making his loss all the more impactful.
Now stepping into an even bigger role, Gibbs has been one of the Lions’ most dynamic players this year, recording 1,047 rushing yards, 395 receiving yards, and 14 touchdowns on 225 total touches.
Speaking on “Up & Adams” with Kay Adams, Gibbs reflected on Montgomery’s support and shared the message that continues to motivate him.
“He just told me to keep going,” Gibbs said. “He loves me.”
Montgomery’s injury, combined with other setbacks to players like defensive linemen Alim McNeill and Aidan Hutchinson, presents a steep challenge for the Lions. Gibbs also expressed his personal sadness about losing Montgomery, both as a teammate and friend.
“I’m sad, I’m going to miss him,” Gibbs said. “He was one of the heartbeats of this team, but we’re still going to be in touch. We’ll still see him.”
As the Lions push for the NFC’s top seed and aim for a deep playoff run, Gibbs will lead a backfield that now depends on depth players like Craig Reynolds and Sione Vaki to maintain balance. With Montgomery sidelined, Gibbs’ performance will be vital to Detroit’s championship hopes.
