The Detroit Lions are in desperate need of reinforcements on defense, as injuries have decimated the unit throughout the season.
At this stage in the season, it’s nearly impossible for Detroit to make a significant addition to bolster the defense. However, there’s one name the Lions should be watching closely in the coming weeks: Miami Dolphins defensive lineman Calais Campbell.
Campbell recently hinted that he could be waived by Miami if the team is eliminated from playoff contention, allowing him to join a contender.
“Whether Calais Campbell will finish the season here is fluid,” Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reported. “Will be here at least as long as in playoff contention. If Fins eliminated, Dolphins releasing him to join contender still in play.”
While the Dolphins aren’t officially out of contention yet, they’re on the brink.
The AFC East has been clinched for weeks, and the 6-8 Dolphins are two games out of the final playoff spot heading into Week 16. In short, it’s likely only a matter of time.
If Campbell becomes available, Marissa Myers of TWSN predicts the Lions will make a strong push to sign him.
“With Campbell, the Lions would get a talented player to boost the depth and ensure the defensive line isn’t what holds them back,” Myers said. “This Lions team has the potential to make the Super Bowl, but they can’t let their window go to waste. That’s why they have to sign Campbell if he were to get released.”
Even at 38, Campbell remains productive, recording four sacks, 32 pressures, and 10 tackles for loss this season. His versatility to play both inside and outside adds even more value.
While Campbell would be a seamless fit for the Lions, who have lost three of their four starting defensive linemen, he would first have to pass through waivers.
That’s where the challenge lies. Several playoff-bound teams would likely pursue Campbell, and the Lions’ lower waiver wire priority makes their chances of landing the six-time Pro Bowler slim.
Still, Detroit fans can dream.
