The Detroit Lions have been one of the top teams in the NFL this season, but injuries have significantly impacted their roster. However, there’s some positive news as linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin has returned to practice. According to Lions reporter Colton Pouncy, the team has opened up his practice window.
Reeves-Maybin, who has been sidelined since Week 9 due to a neck injury, will have 21 days to work his way back to the active roster. A key contributor on special teams and a depth option at linebacker, his return could bolster the team’s efforts as they prepare for the postseason.
Key Players on Injured Reserve but Potential Returns Loom
The Lions have placed numerous players on injured reserve this season but remain hopeful that some could return in time for the playoffs. Despite the challenges, they’ve continued to perform at a high level.
Lions Navigating a Wave of Injuries
The Lions’ defense has borne the brunt of the injury bug. Defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn remains optimistic about the resilience of his unit despite the setbacks.
“When you lose players like that, it’s always tough,” Glenn said, via Sports Illustrated’s Christian Booher. “I’m not going to pretend it’s not frustrating, but my perspective is probably different from most. I feel for the players because of the seasons they were having. I always look at it from their point of view.”
The defense has lost key players to injured reserve, including defensive ends Aidan Hutchinson and Marcus Davenport, defensive tackle Alim McNeill, linebackers Alex Anzalone and Derrick Barnes, and cornerback Carlton Davis. With high expectations heading into the season, these losses are significant. Still, the Lions have embraced a “next-man-up” mentality and have proven their ability to adapt and persevere.
Offensive Challenges Persist
On offense, running back David Montgomery is dealing with an MCL injury and may miss the remainder of the season. He is seeking a third medical opinion to determine his status. In his absence, rookie Jahmyr Gibbs is expected to take on a larger role. Gibbs has been effective in a shared backfield with Montgomery and will look to maintain his productivity.
Staying on Top in the NFC
Injuries are part of the game, but the Lions remain in a strong position in the NFC. With the Philadelphia Eagles and Minnesota Vikings closely trailing, the Lions hope to secure a first-round bye in the playoffs. The focus now is on staying healthy and continuing their push toward the postseason.
