The Detroit Lions will be well-represented at the 2025 Pro Bowl Games, even if they fall short of a Super Bowl appearance. However, one notable absence from the roster is star safety Kerby Joseph. Despite leading the league with nine interceptions, the 24-year-old will not be among the seven Lions players heading to Orlando, Florida, in February.
Joseph’s exclusion comes as Green Bay Packers free safety Xavier McKinney earns the NFC spot instead. McKinney has posted seven interceptions, 84 combined tackles, and one fumble recovery this season. While Joseph’s teammate, strong safety Brian Branch, ensures at least one Lions defensive back makes the roster, fans are baffled by what they see as a clear snub.
Detroit defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn offered a cryptic but pointed response when asked about Joseph’s omission. “I think we all know that, but it is what it is,” Glenn said, according to The Athletic’s Colton Pouncy.
Was Kerby Joseph Penalized for His Reputation?
Glenn’s comment has sparked speculation, with many fans attributing the snub to Joseph’s reputation as a “dirty player.” The 2022 third-round pick has faced significant criticism for his aggressive play style, including low hits that caused major injuries to tight ends T.J. Hockenson and Tyler Higbee last season. Most recently, he was involved in a heated exchange with wide receiver Jauan Jennings.
Some believe this perception may have influenced the voting process. Although Joseph received the most fan votes for his position, Pro Bowl selections also depend on votes from coaches and players. Their disagreement with public opinion could explain why McKinney got the nod instead.
Joseph’s stats, however, paint a different story. Alongside his league-leading nine interceptions, he has recorded 77 combined tackles, 12 passes defended, and one tackle for loss. His overall grade from Pro Football Focus is 90.7, significantly higher than McKinney’s 87.1.
Fuel for the Playoff Push
The Lions have overcome significant adversity this season, and Joseph’s exclusion adds another layer of motivation as the team prepares for Week 18 against the Minnesota Vikings and the playoffs. Detroit’s ability to thrive despite injuries has been a hallmark of their success, and this perceived snub could further galvanize the squad.
For Joseph, it’s a personal challenge. With a standout season already under his belt, he will undoubtedly be eager to prove that his peers made the wrong decision. Expect a highly motivated performance from the Lions’ safety in the weeks ahead.
