The Detroit Lions have created a second vacancy on their 53-man roster ahead of Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Vikings, signaling that two players may return from injury.
Late Thursday, the Lions waived wide receiver Tom Kennedy and re-signed defensive back Morice Norris to the practice squad, a move that offers insight into their plans for the regular season finale.
This decision strongly suggests that wide receiver and punt returner Kalif Raymond will resume his duties this week. Raymond, who has been practicing for two weeks, is expected to take over the returner role that Kennedy had temporarily filled during his absence. With Raymond’s return almost certain, Kennedy’s release points to the team making room for him on the roster.
However, the Lions already had an open roster spot after releasing Norris from the active roster earlier in the week. If Raymond were the only planned return, he could have filled that vacancy without the need to risk Kennedy on waivers.
This brings linebacker Alex Anzalone into focus. The defensive captain returned to practice this week after missing six games due to a broken forearm. While it’s a quick turnaround, Anzalone was listed as a full participant in Thursday’s practice. That evening, he spoke to reporters about the difficult choices ahead.
“Obviously, the doctors and trainers go over the risks: waiting a week, two weeks, practicing more, or playing now,” Anzalone said. “For me, the question is, if something happened, could I live with not playing in the Super Bowl? That’s the kind of decision I have to make.”
It’s possible Anzalone won’t be activated this week, as the Lions value the flexibility of an open roster spot. Still, the moves they’ve made pave the way for his return, which could provide a crucial boost to Detroit’s defense.
