Ben Johnson is expected to be a highly sought-after candidate for head coach positions across the NFL. However, the 38-year-old might make a surprising move and opt not to take a job with a new team.
Mike Florio, founder of Pro Football Talk, appeared on NBC’s “Football Night in America” ahead of the pivotal Week 18 matchup between the Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings. Florio discussed Johnson’s status as a head coaching candidate.
“There’s no guarantee he will leave this year,” Florio said about Johnson. “The key for him is going to be alignment with the front office. That’s going to be a very important factor. Don’t be surprised if he ultimately stays put.”
Johnson caught many off guard last year when he turned down interest from other teams, choosing instead to remain with the Lions for another season. If he does the same this year, it would be an even bigger surprise.
The longer Johnson stays in his current role, the greater the risk that his stock as a head coaching candidate could decrease. This is his second season as the Lions’ offensive coordinator, with Detroit ranking No. 1 in points and No. 2 in yards this season. Last year, they were ranked No. 5 and No. 3, respectively. There’s really no higher place to go from where Johnson currently stands.
Having been an NFL coach since 2012, Johnson has only served as an offensive coordinator for two seasons. He might feel there’s still more to learn and that staying in his current position could provide the best foundation for success should he eventually become a head coach.
