The Los Angeles Chargers are bolstering their backfield just in time for the playoffs. Ezekiel Elliott, recently waived by the Dallas Cowboys, has signed with the team.
Elliott is expected to begin on the practice squad, though there is a strong likelihood he will be activated ahead of the Chargers’ Wild Card matchup against the Houston Texans this Saturday. The Chargers, a team focused on establishing the run, have faced challenges with backfield depth this season.
Elliott, eager to play for a contender, brings a wealth of experience to Los Angeles.
A Proven Veteran
Elliott spent seven seasons with the Cowboys after being selected fourth overall in the 2016 NFL Draft. He had a one-year stint with the New England Patriots before returning to Dallas earlier this season. Now joining the Chargers, Elliott carries an impressive résumé of over 9,000 career rushing yards and 60 touchdowns.
Elliott’s Playoff Aspirations
After eight seasons in Dallas, Elliott reportedly requested his release in hopes of joining a playoff-bound team. That goal has now been realized.
Elliott has appeared in six playoff games during his career, with the Cowboys going 2-4 in those contests.
Potential Impact in Los Angeles
Elliott’s addition provides a key option for the Chargers’ backfield, which has been stretched thin. While head coach Jim Harbaugh may be cautious about altering the existing rotation led by J.K. Dobbins, the team could benefit from Elliott’s experience.
With Gus Edwards nursing an ankle injury, the Chargers may lean on Elliott as additional support behind Dobbins, alongside Kimani Vidal, heading into Saturday’s game against the Texans.
