The Detroit Lions’ season came to a close on Saturday, leaving fans speculating about the future of the roster and which players might depart.
One of the most significant questions surrounds starting right guard Kevin Zeitler. Following an impressive season that was cut short by an injury in Week 18, many have wondered if Zeitler is considering retirement.
Rumors about retirement had been circulating even before his injury, with some speculating it might have become reality if the Lions had won the Super Bowl. However, thanks to a tweet from his wife Sara, it now appears retirement may not be on Zeitler’s agenda.
“Year 14, you say? Blue and silver hearts, you say?” Sara hinted. While nothing is confirmed, it seems there’s a good chance Zeitler could be back in Detroit.
Zeitler was signed to a one-year deal with the Lions in 2024. If the team wants to retain him—and it would be surprising if they didn’t—they’ll need to negotiate a new contract before free agency begins.
In 2024, Zeitler started 16 games for the Lions, allowing just 18 pressures and five sacks. His performance earned him an impressive 86.8 grade from Pro Football Focus, ranking him as the sixth-best guard in the league.
Although Zeitler didn’t make the Pro Bowl this season as he did the year before, he was selected as a third alternate.
Bringing Zeitler back should be a priority for the Lions, as his return would solidify their strongest unit and enable the team to focus on other needs. For now, fans will have to wait and see how this situation unfolds.
