New Bears HC Ben Johnson Has 6-Word Message for Lions WR Amon-Ra St. Brown
Ben Johnson’s time as the Detroit Lions’ offensive coordinator highlighted his talent for developing players, especially standout wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown.
Under Johnson’s leadership, St. Brown blossomed into one of the NFL’s elite receivers. He earned Pro Bowl honors in all three seasons Johnson served as his OC, surpassing 1,100 receiving yards each year and scoring 28 touchdowns during that span.
Now that Johnson has taken over as head coach of the Chicago Bears, St. Brown shared a humorous exchange between them.
On the January 22 episode of his St. Brown Podcast, the Lions wideout recalled telling Johnson: “Two times a year, Ben, we’re going to (expletive) you up.”
Not to be outdone, Johnson quipped back: “I’m going to (expletive) you up.” The lighthearted exchange reflects the competitive spirit between the two as they prepare to square off as division rivals. Both will undoubtedly aim to prove their predictions right.
Amon-Ra St. Brown on Ben Johnson: I Know His Tendencies
Despite the playful banter, St. Brown spoke highly of Johnson, expressing respect and gratitude for his former coach.
“Ben is one of the hardest-working coaches I’ve ever been around,” St. Brown said, crediting Johnson with playing a pivotal role in the Lions’ offensive success.
“I love Ben. I’m happy for him, happy for his family, his kids,” he added, showcasing the strong professional bond they shared.
Looking to the future, St. Brown anticipates some fierce battles between the Lions and Bears — and he believes Detroit holds an edge. “I know all the plays he likes to run. I know all his tendencies,” he said with a laugh.
Bears Weaken Lions by Hiring Johnson
Johnson’s innovative offensive schemes turned the Lions into an offensive powerhouse. His departure creates a significant void for Detroit, especially with defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn also taking a head coaching role with the New York Jets.
As the Bears’ new head coach, Johnson is expected to revamp their offense. His proven ability to maximize talent should benefit the Bears’ receiving corps, including Rome Odunze and DJ Moore, with fresh, creative approaches to attacking defenses.
Johnson’s experience developing quarterbacks will also be vital for Bears rookie Caleb Williams. His offensive system, which prioritizes quick decision-making and precise throws, should facilitate Williams’ growth. Johnson is expected to incorporate more play-action schemes, which could enhance Chicago’s running game as well.
While St. Brown knows Johnson’s tendencies, the reverse is also true. Johnson’s familiarity with Detroit’s offensive and defensive philosophies could give the Bears an advantage in future matchups.
Meanwhile, the Lions face the challenge of finding a replacement capable of sustaining the high-powered offense Johnson built. For the Bears, however, hiring Johnson could be a transformative moment as they embark on a new era with their most promising head coach in years.
