Former Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford continues to show his love for Detroit, recently gifting an autographed jersey to a Lions fan who sold it to fund his daughter’s trip to the Lions’ playoff game against the Washington Commanders.
However, since joining the Los Angeles Rams in 2021, Stafford has remained a key part of the franchise and appears set to continue playing for at least another season.
Now, speculation suggests that Stafford could eventually be replaced by a quarterback with starting experience but who has yet to reach his full potential.
Former Lions QB Once Again at the Center of Trade Talk
On January 28, NFL analyst Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports proposed a series of blockbuster quarterback trades that could shape the offseason.
With the 2025 NFL Draft class lacking elite quarterback talent, teams in need of a signal-caller might look toward veteran options, potentially leading to a busy trade market.
Benjamin outlined 17 quarterback swaps in his feature, including a notable move involving the Rams. He projected that Los Angeles could acquire Minnesota Vikings quarterback Daniel Jones—formerly of the New York Giants—as a future successor to Stafford.
“Matthew Stafford is the unquestioned starter if he returns, but he’s soon to be 37,” Benjamin noted. “It’s time Sean McVay gets a younger arm to develop, and he’s embraced reclamation projects before (i.e. Baker Mayfield).”
While Stafford will turn 37 in February, NFL insider Ian Rapoport has reported that he does not intend to retire yet. His future with the Rams, however, may hinge on contract negotiations.
