In recent days, much of the discussion surrounding the Detroit Lions has centered on their pursuit of a premier edge rusher.
With pass rush being a clear area of need, Myles Garrett’s trade request has fueled speculation about the Lions making a major move to bolster their defensive front.
However, edge rush isn’t the only concern for Detroit’s defense.
Cornerback remains a position in need of reinforcement, despite last offseason’s significant investments at the spot.
Interestingly, their potential solution at corner could come at the expense of former defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, who recently took over as the head coach of the New York Jets.
According to USA Today’s Nick Brinkerhoff, the Lions are projected to sign Jets cornerback D.J. Reed in free agency. In the same report, Brinkerhoff predicted that the Jets would sign Lions corner Carlton Davis, leaving Detroit with a vacancy in their secondary.
Reed appears to be a strong candidate to fill that role.
Last season, Pro Football Reference recorded Reed allowing just 57.1% of passes completed when targeted, while holding opposing quarterbacks to 6.4 yards per attempt.
In contrast, the Lions’ defense struggled in that category in 2024, surrendering 7.2 yards per attempt, which ranked 11th worst in the NFL.
With Detroit needing a reliable veteran to take pressure off the competition between Terrion Arnold and Ennis Rakestraw Jr. for the CB2 role, Reed would be a logical fit to step in and succeed where Davis thrived last season.
