After the Kansas City Chiefs secured the Lamar Hunt trophy with a 32-29 win over the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Championship game, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was interviewed by CBS Sports’ Jim Nantz. Mahomes shared his admiration for Bills QB Josh Allen, calling him a true competitor and warrior.
“I have so much respect for Josh [Allen], man. [He’s] just a true competitor, a true warrior, a great football player,” Mahomes said on January 26. “[Our matchups] always come down to the wire. Luckily, we were on the winning side this time.”
Mahomes concluded his interview with a bold statement about Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans: “Let’s go make history.”
Chiefs Advance to Super Bowl LIX
The Chiefs will now face the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX after a thrilling AFC Championship victory.
In a classic battle between Mahomes and Allen, the Chiefs took a three-point lead with less than three minutes remaining and followed it with a crucial fourth down stand on defense. On the Chiefs’ final drive, they secured two first downs to run out the clock and seal the win.
Mahomes finished the game completing 18-of-26 passes for 245 yards and one touchdown. He also rushed for 43 yards on 11 carries, scoring two touchdowns. A botched handoff with running back Isiah Pacheco resulted in a fumble for Mahomes.
Rookie wide receiver Xavier Worthy led the Chiefs in receiving with six catches for 85 yards and one touchdown. Veteran running back Kareem Hunt contributed with 17 carries for 64 yards and one touchdown.
The Chiefs made history as the first team to reach the Super Bowl after winning back-to-back championships. They are also the first team to play in five Super Bowls in six seasons.
Reactions to Chiefs Facing Eagles in Super Bowl LIX
Fans and analysts on X (formerly Twitter) shared their thoughts on the Chiefs advancing to face the Eagles.
“The fact the Chiefs have beaten Josh Allen and this Bills team four straight times in the postseason feels like an astonishing statistical improbability and an absolute testament to their greatness,” Rustin Dodd of The Athletic wrote.
“It’s totally your right to hate the Chiefs. All I’d say is you’re probably going to have a miserable next 7 or 8 years (or however much longer Pat’s greatness lasts). Probably easier to just accept it,” Stephen Holder of The Athletic wrote.
“Patrick Mahomes has been an NFL starter for seven seasons, and the worst finish of his career is losing in the AFC Championship Game — both times in overtime. In the other five seasons, he’s made the Super Bowl. Just not normal,” Jordan Schultz of FOX Sports wrote.
“The same people saying the Chiefs are boring are the same ones that 10 years from now will talk about how the Patrick Mahomes Chiefs were a problem,” another user commented. “We’ve seen this same situation play out with the Patriots, Heat, and Warriors. Quit your crying and enjoy greatness.”
