ESPN’s Rich Cimini: Jets Owner Woody Johnson Breaks Silence on Firing of HC Robert Saleh

The New York Jets have parted ways with head coach Robert Saleh, as reported by ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter on Tuesday, October 8.

Jets owner Woody Johnson issued a statement on social media announcing the decision, thanking Saleh for his dedication over the past three-and-a-half years but noting that the team’s current standing did not meet expectations.

Johnson explained, “This was not an easy decision, but we are not where we should be given our expectations, and I believe now is the best time for us to move in a different direction.”

Defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich will take over as interim head coach for the remainder of the season.

Johnson expressed confidence in Ulbrich’s leadership, highlighting his respect within the organization. “He is a tough coach who has the respect of the coaches and players on this team,” Johnson said, which some interpreted as a subtle critique of Saleh.

SNY’s Connor Hughes shared the sentiment of shock within the organization, saying, “Sources confirm that the Jets have fired Robert Saleh. I’ve spoken with several people, and the common reaction is: Stunned. No one saw this coming.”

Robert Saleh, 45, was hired as the Jets’ head coach in 2021, finishing his tenure with a 20-36 record. His departure comes after a loss to the Denver Broncos, which reportedly heightened tension within the team.

ESPN’s Rich Cimini noted the surprise of Saleh’s firing, stating, “A stunning decision.

There was a sense Johnson’s patience was thinning, but it seemed he’d give it another week or two. The loss to Denver rattled the organization.”

Despite the turmoil, the Jets remain only one game out of first place in the AFC East. If they defeat the Buffalo Bills in Week 6, they will tie Buffalo in record with the head-to-head advantage.

However, linebacker Quincy Williams’ postgame comments reflected frustration within the team, saying, “People gotta start taking accountability. People get tired of hearing the same thing every week.”

The decision to part with Saleh reportedly came from Woody Johnson, not GM Joe Douglas, as Johnson felt the team needed immediate change to salvage the season. NFL Insider Dianna Russini noted that Johnson views the Jets as a contender and wanted to act before it was too late.

This marks the first time under Johnson’s ownership that the Jets have made an in-season coaching change, a rare move for the franchise. ESPN’s Rich Cimini pointed out the historical context, referencing that the last in-season coaching change for the Jets occurred in 1976 when Lou Holtz resigned with one game remaining.
