Interim New York Jets head coach Jeff Ulbrich confirmed during his media availability that veteran linebacker C.J. Mosley is being placed on injured reserve.
“A hard decision by a very prideful, amazing player, leader, all of those things for us. It was not an easy decision for him, but it’s the best decision for him and our organization,” Ulbrich said on Friday, December 6.
Placing Mosley on IR rules him out for at least the next four games. However, with only five games left in the season, the Jets won’t be activating him for the regular season finale.
Jets Career Is Over, and Likely His Overall NFL Career Too
According to ESPN’s Rich Cimini, this move “probably” marks the end of Mosley’s career with the Jets.
Although the 32-year-old linebacker has one year remaining on his $17.25 million contract, several factors—his age (he turns 33 this offseason), the severity of his injuries, and a new coaching regime in 2025—make a return unlikely.
“A terrific player when healthy, great locker-room presence, but it’s a cold business,” Cimini noted.
Mosley appeared in just four games this season, starting three of them. Throughout 2024, he struggled with numerous injuries, the most recent occurring during pre-game warmups in Week 8 against the New England Patriots, when he sustained a neck injury. That game was the last time Mosley took the field.
Given his age and the seriousness of his injury, this could also signal the end of Mosley’s NFL career entirely.
From Baltimore to New York
Mosley joined the Jets during the 2019 offseason after being lured away from the Baltimore Ravens with a record-breaking $85 million contract.
His first two seasons with the team were riddled with challenges. In his debut campaign, Mosley suffered an injury that limited him to just two games. The following year, he opted out of the 2020 season due to COVID.
However, from 2021 to 2023, Mosley became a fixture for the Jets, appearing in 50 out of 51 possible games. He earned second-team All-Pro honors and a Pro Bowl selection after a standout 2022 season.
A Future Ring of Honor Member and Possible Hall of Famer
Surprisingly, Mosley spent more seasons with the Jets (six) than with the Ravens (five).
Over the course of his career, Mosley played in 133 games, starting 132 of them. He tallied 1,083 tackles, 12 sacks, 12 interceptions, 10 forced fumbles, nine fumble recoveries, 53 pass deflections, and 40 quarterback hits.
He earned five second-team All-Pro selections and five Pro Bowl nods during his career.
While Mosley’s place in the Pro Football Hall of Fame remains up for debate, his inclusion in the Jets’ Ring of Honor seems like a certainty.
During some of the Jets’ darkest years, Mosley stood out as a consistent and inspirational leader—a true team legend.
