The New York Jets have reopened their search for a general manager in 2025.
Earlier this week, Washington Commanders’ assistant GM Lance Newmark was the only known finalist for the Jets’ GM position. However, the team opted to expand its candidate pool.
On Thursday, January 23, the Jets are set to interview Cincinnati Bengals senior personnel executive Trey Brown and Denver Broncos assistant GM Darren Mougey.
CBS NFL Insider Jonathan Jones reported on social media that the “expectation [is] a decision may be made by the end of [the] day.”
Decision Looming, Jaguars Wildcard Eliminated
The Jacksonville Jaguars are also seeking a general manager after parting ways with Trent Baalke on Wednesday, January 22. Their search comes unusually late in the hiring cycle, several weeks after the regular season ended.
Despite this, the Jets appear to be moving quickly, minimizing any potential impact from the Jaguars’ search.
Typically, NFL teams hire a general manager before selecting a head coach, but the Jets prioritized securing Aaron Glenn to prevent him from joining another team. The new GM will work alongside Glenn to build the Jets’ power structure for the 2025 season.

Insight Into the Jets’ GM Search
“Trey Brown is a fascinating candidate,” SNY’s Connor Hughes shared. “He has experience with three very distinct team-building philosophies: working with Bill Belichick and the Patriots, Howie Roseman and the Eagles, and the Bengals. That exposure to old-school football, analytics-driven decisions, and budget-conscious team-building could make him valuable in any environment.”
Brown has interviewed for several GM positions over the years, including with the Buffalo Bills in 2017, the Oakland Raiders in 2018, and the Las Vegas Raiders in 2022, per the Jets’ press release.
“Darren Mougey, aka ‘Mooge,’ is another intriguing name,” FOX NFL Insider Peter Schrager noted. “He predates Denver’s current regime, going back to John Elway. George Paton promoted him, and he’s been a key sounding board for Sean Payton, who remains close with Aaron Glenn.”couting intern (2012)
