The Philadelphia Eagles have released veteran linebacker Devin White, who signed a one-year deal this offseason. The former Pro Bowler never played in a regular-season game for the Eagles.
White was brought in to provide a productive player and veteran presence in the middle of the Eagles’ defense, but that never materialized after he lost a position battle to Nakobe Dean.
He was also overshadowed by younger linebackers and special teams contributors Ben VanSumeren and Jeremiah Trotter Jr. during his brief tenure in Philadelphia.
At just 26 years old, White is now looking to make an impact elsewhere. By releasing him now, the Eagles have given White a chance to find a new team before trade discussions intensify ahead of the Nov. 5 deadline.
There should be a decent market for White, a 2021 Pro Bowler who played a key role in the Buccaneers’ championship season in 2020. As a former No. 5 overall pick, White was a productive tackler who also had the ability to reach quarterbacks and force turnovers during his time in Tampa.
In the Buccaneers’ Super Bowl season, White set career highs with 140 tackles and nine sacks while also forcing and recovering a fumble. Last year, he recorded a career-high two interceptions in what ultimately became his final season in Tampa Bay.
Here are five potential landing spots for White:
Bengals
Cincinnati’s defense has struggled significantly this year, contributing to their 1-4 start. While the Bengals have long-term starters at linebacker in Logan Wilson and Germaine Pratt, they should explore every option to improve their defense, making White a viable candidate. He could provide depth and competition to a defense that needs both.
Jets
The Jets could be a good fit for White, especially with C.J. Mosley’s ongoing toe injury that has kept him out of the last three games. With owner Woody Johnson’s recent decision to fire Robert Saleh, the Jets are clearly in win-now mode, making White’s potential signing even more appealing.
Lions
Detroit’s defense recently took a hit with linebacker Derrick Barnes suffering a season-threatening injury against the Cardinals in Week 3. Although Barnes primarily played on the outside, adding White would offer Detroit more flexibility with their defensive personnel. White could also provide a much-needed pass rush to complement Aidan Hutchinson.
Jaguars
Foyesade Oluokun’s foot injury has left a significant gap in the middle of Jacksonville’s defense. While Oluokun is expected to return this season, the Jaguars could benefit from signing White in the meantime. He would also add depth when Oluokun is ready to come back.
Buccaneers
A potential reunion with Tampa Bay cannot be ruled out, especially since the Buccaneers have recently placed promising linebacker SirVocea Dennis on injured reserve. Unlike the other teams on this list, White is already familiar with the Buccaneers’ defensive system and would not require an acclimation period.
