For the fourth consecutive week, the Pittsburgh Steelers are preparing for Justin Fields to start at quarterback, hoping their matchup with the Indianapolis Colts mirrors their first three games of the season — all victories.
With veteran Russell Wilson keeping a watchful eye, Fields shares that hope. It’s hard to bench a quarterback on an undefeated team, even if they began the season as a backup.
A 4-0 record is a 4-0 record, and Fields seems highly motivated to continue this streak, as evidenced by his recent Instagram post ahead of Week 4.
“Not finished but enjoying the moment… 3-0,” Fields captioned.
The message is clear: Fields and the Steelers aren’t backing down as long as he’s in charge.
Steelers HC Mike Tomlin Acknowledges Justin Fields’ Play as ‘Exciting’ for Organization Speaking to reporters on September 24, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin was asked if Fields’ performance has allowed them to be cautious with Wilson’s calf injury.
“There’s no question Justin has played well, and that’s exciting for him and for us,” Tomlin said. “But it’s not a surprise, and we haven’t factored it into decision-making yet because it’s not time.”
Tomlin went on to talk about Fields’ strengths as a quarterback, highlighting one key trait.
“As I’ve said before, I like his steady demeanor,” Tomlin noted. “It’s something I value in a leader. He doesn’t get caught up in the highs or lows, and the team can rally around that.”
“[Fields is] steady,” Tomlin continued. “He’s a competitor who embraces challenges. He’s aggressive in his play — scrambling and making moves.”
“It’s been fun getting to know him, not just as a person but as a competitor,” Tomlin concluded.
Steelers Teammates Describe Justin Fields as a Leader Yardbarker Steelers reporter Aaron Becker spoke with several players in the Pittsburgh locker room on September 25, asking about Fields and his leadership style.
“I feel like he’s one of those laid-back guys, even off the field,” tight end Darnell Washington said. “He’s just a calm dude. That carries over onto the field.”
Wide receiver George Pickens echoed this sentiment in his conversation with Becker.
“He’s playing well. Personally, that’s what I take from it,” Pickens shared. “He doesn’t talk much, so I wouldn’t call him a vocal leader. But Darnell’s right; it’s about how he shows up every day in practice.”
Rookie wide receiver Roman Wilson added: “He’s quiet but speaks up when necessary. He’s a great leader, a great player. People love playing for him. I love having him as our quarterback — tough, physical, and he’s got that ‘it’ factor.”
As the Steelers head into Week 4 with a 3-0 record, the locker room appears fully behind Fields. If they can extend this winning streak, there’s no telling how far the Steelers could go in 2024.
