NFL insider Aaron Wilson Hint: Steelers to bringing in former Arizona Cardinals WR Second Rounder Amidst Injury and Roste Reinforcements

The Pittsburgh Steelers took a look at another wide receiver and potential returner on October 1, bringing in former Arizona Cardinals second rounder Andy Isabella in for a workout

The Pittsburgh Steelers are actively evaluating their roster as they prepare for Week 5, highlighted by a recent workout involving wide receiver and return specialist Andy Isabella. The news was first reported by Joe Rutter of TribLIVE.com and later confirmed by NFL insider Aaron Wilson.

Isabella, a second-round pick by the Arizona Cardinals in 2019, has struggled to live up to his draft pedigree. Selected 62nd overall, Isabella had a slow start to his NFL career. In 39 games over four seasons with the Cardinals, he recorded just 447 receiving yards and 3 touchdowns, far below the expectations for a player drafted that high. As a returner, however, Isabella has been slightly more effective, averaging 21.2 yards per kick return. Despite these flashes, Arizona ultimately waived him in 2022.

After leaving the Cardinals, Isabella landed with the Baltimore Ravens, joining their practice squad. He appeared in two games for the Ravens during the 2022 season. Later, Isabella signed with the Buffalo Bills, where he participated in the 2023 season and the 2024 offseason, including training camp and preseason action. He played in two regular season games for the Bills before being released at the final 53-man roster cut this year.

As of now, it remains uncertain if Isabella will be signed by the Steelers. His addition could bolster Pittsburgh’s receiving and return game, especially with ongoing injuries impacting the team. In recent days, the Steelers have made several roster moves, and more could follow as they gear up for their next game against the Dallas Cowboys.

Mike Tomlin Hints at Injury Reinforcements

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin acknowledged that roster adjustments could still be forthcoming, particularly in the form of players returning from the injured reserve (IR) or the physically unable to perform (PUP) list. When asked if any players would be activated, Tomlin responded, “I haven’t had those meetings yet, but probably.”

One player mentioned by name was linebacker Cole Holcomb. Holcomb, a 2019 fifth-round pick, could be among the players Pittsburgh activates this week. Also on the list of potential returnees are outside linebacker Jeremiah Moon and offensive lineman Dylan Cook. Both were placed on IR after the preseason and have now completed the mandatory four-week absence.

“There’s a level of excitement there,” Tomlin said, emphasizing the importance of evaluating the quality of participation during practice before making a final decision. The potential return of these players would be a welcome boost for the Steelers, who are dealing with mounting injuries as they approach the midpoint of the season.

Steelers’ Wide Receiver Struggles

The Steelers’ offensive woes have been well-documented, particularly in the passing game. Outside of star wide receiver George Pickens and tight end Pat Freiermuth, the team’s receiving corps has struggled to make a significant impact. Calvin Austin III is the only other player to accumulate over 100 receiving yards through the first four games.

The remaining receivers have been largely ineffective. Veteran Van Jefferson has managed just 36 yards across four games, while Scotty Miller has contributed 31 yards. Rookie Roman Wilson and injured special teams contributor Ben Skowronek have yet to record a catch this season.

Given these issues, it’s no surprise that the Steelers are exploring potential reinforcements at the wide receiver position. Trade rumors have begun circulating, with several big names possibly available as the NFL trade deadline approaches. One name generating buzz is Las Vegas Raiders wideout Davante Adams. However, Adams would command a hefty price, and it’s unclear whether the Steelers are willing to make such a significant investment.

As Pittsburgh continues to build upon their strong start to the season, now sitting at 3-1, addressing the wide receiver position is crucial. Despite quarterback Justin Fields throwing for over 300 yards in the most recent game, the Steelers have lacked consistent production from their pass-catchers
