The Pittsburgh Steelers were active at the NFL trade deadline and have continued to make roster moves, adding to their practice squad in the following 24 hours.
On November 6, the Steelers announced the addition of tight end Matt Sokol to their practice squad, along with defensive tackle Domenique Davis.
This is the third time the Steelers have signed Sokol this year. They first brought him onto their roster before the preseason on July 30, only to release him on roster cutdown day.
Sokol rejoined the practice squad on September 18, but he was released again less than a week later.
November 6 marked the first time Davis signed with the Steelers. Previously, Davis had spent his entire NFL career with the Cincinnati Bengals.
Steelers Sign TE Matt Sokol Again
Sokol entered the league as an undrafted free agent in 2019 and has since spent time with five different teams, including Pittsburgh.
He began his career with the Los Angeles Chargers as an undrafted free agent. Although he didn’t make the final roster, he spent the early part of his rookie season on their practice squad.
He ended his rookie year on the Jacksonville Jaguars’ practice squad before joining the Detroit Lions at the start of the 2020 season. However, he returned to the Chargers and made his NFL debut on December 27, 2020.
In two games that season with the Chargers, Sokol played 15 offensive snaps and 20 special teams snaps.
His next chance to play in an NFL regular season game came in 2022 with the New England Patriots, where he dressed for three games over the 2022 and 2023 seasons.
The Patriots waived Sokol multiple times across those two seasons, but technically he had only one stint with New England, as he didn’t sign with any other teams between those waivers.
Sokol’s time with the Steelers has followed a similar pattern. Although he’s now been signed three times since July, Pittsburgh is the only team he’s been with during that period, technically giving him a single stint.
Throughout his three-year NFL career, Sokol has had two stints each with the Chargers, Jaguars, and Lions.
In eight NFL regular season games, Sokol has yet to record a target or tackle. He started one game for the Patriots in 2023.
Steelers Add Sokol With Domenique Davis
Steelers Now’s Alan Saunders reported on November 5 that the Steelers would be adding Davis to their practice squad. The team made the signing official along with the return of Sokol.
Davis appeared in two games for the Bengals during the 2022 season, recording three tackles over 38 defensive snaps and three special teams snaps.
The Bengals initially signed Davis as an undrafted free agent in 2022. They waived him at the end of the preseason but brought him back on the practice squad.
He played as a practice squad elevation during the 2022 season, and although the Bengals elevated him on September 23 this year, he didn’t see game action in Week 3. Davis was waived by Cincinnati on October 22.
Currently, Sokol is the only tight end on the Steelers’ practice squad. Davis, meanwhile, joins Breiden Fehoko and Jacob Slade at defensive tackle on the squad.
