49ers Officially Announced Talanoa Hufanga placed on IR

The San Francisco 49ers made several roster adjustments on Wednesday in preparation for their Thursday night game against the Seattle Seahawks.

Starting strong safety Talanoa Hufanga was placed on injured reserve (IR), while tight end Brayden Willis was elevated to the active roster from the practice squad in a corresponding move.

Hufanga suffered torn ligaments in his wrist early in the 49ers’ Week 5 loss to the Arizona Cardinals. He exited the game in the first half and did not return.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan informed reporters during a Tuesday press conference that Hufanga would be sidelined for about a month due to the injury. With his placement on IR, he will now be required to miss at least four weeks before he can begin practicing again during his 21-day activation window.

The earliest Hufanga could potentially return is Week 10 after the 49ers’ bye week, when they face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Rookie fourth-round pick Malik Mustapha is expected to start in his place, having filled in after Hufanga’s departure in Week 5.

Willis’s promotion raises questions about a possible shift in the 49ers’ offensive approach. While their running game has posted solid numbers, the team has attempted more passes than runs this season and has struggled to consistently achieve short-yardage situations.

By promoting Willis, the 49ers may be looking to incorporate more multi-tight end sets to reinvigorate their rushing attack. Additionally, as a capable pass catcher, Willis could contribute in the passing game if he continues to progress.
