The San Francisco 49ers continue to struggle with injuries, and the latest update on running back Jordan Mason could have significant implications.
Following their 36-24 win over the Seattle Seahawks, Mason sustained a shoulder injury that forced him out of the game early in the third quarter.
After the game, head coach Kyle Shanahan provided a positive update on Mason’s condition.
“He stayed available just in case of an emergency,” Shanahan said during his post-game press conference. “He thought he’d be alright, but after going back in, it hurt too much, so he came out again. I think that was his first play, and then he was sidelined in case of an emergency.”
On October 11, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Mason had sprained his AC joint, which is typically a minor injury. However, Mason is set to undergo further testing, so while the initial news seems optimistic, there’s still a possibility the situation could become more complex.
49ers Face Another Kicker Injury
The 49ers’ injury woes extend to the kicker position as well. Already down two kickers, San Francisco’s crisis deepened when backup kicker Matthew Wright suffered a tackle-related injury during the game against Seattle, after replacing Jake Moody, who had been injured during their 24-23 loss to the Arizona Cardinals.
Shanahan addressed the issue post-game, expressing concern about his kickers’ involvement in tackles.
“I’m not sure how I feel about that anymore,” Shanahan said. “When they’re the last line of defense, I’d never tell them to just let the other team score. But after two weeks in a row… I just hope he’s okay.”
Wright’s status remains unclear, though the 49ers recently worked out four other kickers alongside Wright before signing the 28-year-old on Tuesday.
Additional Injury Updates for San Francisco
Beyond Wright and Mason, there are a few other injury updates to keep an eye on.
Tight end George Kittle briefly left the game and headed to the locker room. When asked about it afterward, Kittle downplayed the situation with a playful response.
“I had to use the bathroom,” Kittle quipped. When pressed if that was true, he replied, “I don’t know. Maybe. Who knows?”
Meanwhile, cornerback Charvarius Ward, who suffered a knee bruise against Arizona, did not play against Seattle despite being a game-time decision.
Shanahan explained Ward’s situation post-game, saying, “It was close. He worked out pre-game, and it was a game-time decision, but he couldn’t go.”
