The San Francisco 49ers could use reinforcements in several areas, but there are warnings about a potential move for a two-time Pro Bowler.
After a key victory over the Seattle Seahawks, the 49ers are back to .500. However, injuries, particularly on the defensive line, have taken a toll.
While adding a new pass rusher could be beneficial, Sports Illustrated’s Jose Luiz Sanchez III advises San Francisco to steer clear of New York Jets defensive end Haason Reddick.
Reddick, who earned two Pro Bowl honors with the Philadelphia Eagles, hasn’t played since joining the Jets. His ongoing contract holdout is the main reason the 49ers should avoid him.
“One way they can improve their pass rush is by trading for New York Jets defensive end Haason Reddick. He’s reportedly on the trade block, so the 49ers could inquire about him,” Sanchez wrote on October 15. “However, the 49ers should stay away from Reddick. While he’s a talented player who could help the team reach the Super Bowl, the issue is that Reddick is seeking a long-term, high-paying contract.”
Reddick is an elite edge rusher, but his demand for a lucrative deal is likely a non-starter for San Francisco.
Reddick’s Pro Bowl Seasons
Even before his stint with the Eagles in 2022, Reddick was a standout player. He posted 12.5 sacks in his final season with the Arizona Cardinals in 2020, followed by 11 sacks with the Carolina Panthers in 2021.
His best season came in 2022, when he recorded 16 sacks, five forced fumbles (leading the league), 11 tackles for loss, and three passes defended.
In 2023, Reddick added another 11 sacks to his tally, but the Eagles struggled in the second half of the season. The situation deteriorated, and Philadelphia traded him to the Jets in April 2024 for a third-round pick.
Since then, Reddick hasn’t reported for training camp or played in a game. He requested a trade on August 12, and now the Jets are reportedly exploring options, according to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini.
49ers Facing Depth Issues on the Defensive Line
San Francisco is dealing with injuries across the roster, but the defensive line is particularly depleted.
Defensive tackle Javon Hargrave and defensive end Yetur Matos-Gross are both on injured reserve, and defensive end Drake Jackson is on the PUP list, ruling him out for the season. Although Hargrave and Matos-Gross could return, the defensive line is already thin.
Additionally, defensive tackle Jordan Elliott is nursing an injury. He missed the Thursday night game against the Seahawks but may benefit from extra rest ahead of the 49ers’ matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.
With four more defensive players on IR, the 49ers will likely be considering ways to bolster their defense.
