The San Francisco 49ers’ 2025 offseason just got a lot more intriguing. Setting aside the Brock Purdy contract situation for a moment, it initially seemed unlikely the 49ers would make a significant splash in free agency or the trade market. While they can retain key players like Dre Greenlaw and Talanoa Hufanga, their ability to make major moves appears slim, even with $50 million in cap space. However, one 49ers Pro Bowler is campaigning for the team to acquire a perennial Defensive Player of the Year (DPOY) candidate.

During the NFL’s Divisional Round playoffs, San Francisco 49ers cornerback Deommodore Lenoir sparked buzz on social media by expressing his desire for the team to acquire Las Vegas Raiders defensive lineman Maxx Crosby.

Lenoir’s post immediately ignited conversations among the 49ers’ fan base, with many members of the “Faithful” agreeing with him.

While San Francisco has other priorities, such as bolstering the interior offensive line or finding a dominant defensive tackle, the idea of Crosby lining up opposite Nick Bosa is undeniably enticing.

Crosby, a former fourth-round pick by the Raiders, has been one of the league’s most consistent and dominant edge rushers since entering the NFL. With three double-digit sack seasons to his name, Crosby ranks sixth in sacks since 2019—just two spots behind Bosa. Adding to his impressive résumé are nine forced fumbles and 423 total pressures over six seasons. The Eastern Michigan product has earned a reputation as one of the NFL’s most dangerous defenders.

This isn’t the first time Crosby has been linked to San Francisco. His name surfaced during trade deadline rumors in previous seasons due to general manager John Lynch’s history of making bold moves. While no deal materialized, Crosby’s uncertain future with the Raiders keeps the door open.

Is Crosby Open to a Trade?

On Friday, Crosby appeared on Good Morning Football and addressed trade speculation involving his name.

> “Yeah, I see all those things. Right now, I’m just focusing on my process and day-to-day getting healthy. We’re going to see what happens with the coaching situation. I’ve been with the Raiders for six years, and I’m currently under contract. I talked about it before—I have no guaranteed money left. There are a lot of things that need to be discussed. We’re going to do that.”

Crosby emphasized that he’s happy in Las Vegas but has been vocal about his desire to win a Super Bowl. If the Raiders enter another rebuild, a trade could benefit both sides—especially if San Francisco gets involved.

The Cost of Acquiring Crosby

Acquiring Crosby won’t come cheap, with his asking price likely starting at a first-round pick and additional assets. However, the 49ers are well-positioned to be aggressive. With the 11th overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, they have the capital to make a move.

Unlike their trade for Trey Lance, a deal for Crosby would bring in a proven star who can contribute immediately. If the 49ers are serious about maximizing their championship window, they must at least explore the possibility.

According to Over the Cap, Crosby is under contract through 2026. Any acquiring team would owe him $42.8 million, though the lack of guaranteed money in his deal makes it manageable. Additionally, with three void years in his contract, San Francisco could extend him to reduce his 2025 and 2026 cap hits.

The Perfect Acquisition

Trading for Maxx Crosby could be the ultimate offseason move for the 49ers. Pairing him with Nick Bosa would create a nightmare for opposing offenses and potentially elevate San Francisco to the next level. If the 49ers want to capitalize on their championship aspirations, Crosby should be at the top of their list.
