A Disappointing Start with the 49ers
Drafted 101st overall by the 49ers, Latu entered the NFL with high expectations following a standout collegiate career at Alabama. Originally a linebacker, Latu transitioned to tight end and recorded 56 receptions for 787 yards and 12 touchdowns in his final two seasons. His size (6-foot-4, 240 pounds), athleticism, and red-zone capabilities made him an appealing prospect. However, his time in San Francisco fell short of expectations.
Latu struggled to grasp the playbook, drawing criticism from coaches and leading to inconsistencies on the field. During the 2023 preseason, his issues were further exposed with dropped passes and difficulty adjusting to the NFL’s speed. A meniscus injury sidelined him for the entire regular season, placing him on injured reserve.
With established tight ends like Charlie Woerner and Ross Dwelley ahead of him, Latu was unable to secure a meaningful role. After two disappointing years, the 49ers released him during their 2024 roster cuts. He spent the remainder of the season on the Cleveland Browns’ practice squad, a frustrating chapter for the once-promising prospect.
A Fresh Start in Philadelphia
Philadelphia now offers Latu a chance to reset his career. Under head coach Nick Sirianni, the Eagles have built a dynamic offense that emphasizes creativity and values tight end involvement. With Dallas Goedert entrenched as the starter, Philadelphia has the patience to develop depth at the position, making Latu an intriguing addition.
Latu’s size and red-zone skillset align well with the Eagles’ system, which often utilizes multiple tight-end formations. While he’s likely to start as a backup and special teams contributor, Philadelphia’s commitment to player development provides him with a strong platform to refine his skills and adjust to the NFL’s demands.
