Kyle Larson Comes Up Short In Rare NASCAR Triple Bid

Kyle Larson had a lead of 14.798 seconds with 10 laps left in Saturday’s NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Homestead-Miami Speedway. The winner of Friday night’s Baptist Health 200 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race looked on track to win his second race in one of NASCAR’s three national touring series in as many days if he won the Cup, Xfinity, and Truck series races at Homestead this weekend. Kyle Busch was the only other driver to win all three series at the same track on the same weekend, having done so at Bristol in 2010 and 2017. However, with seven laps left in Saturday’s Hard Rock Bet 300, Taylor Gray spun on the frontstretch, wiping out Larson’s lead, which had increased to 16.633 seconds.

Larson went to the inside with Sam Mayer on his bumper as they choose their lanes for the restart. Justin Allgaier, the winner of the Xfinity Series, followed Austin Hill outside. Allgaier took the lead as they raced down the backstretch after Larson and Hill both spun their tires on the restart that sent the race into overtime. Allgaier persevered to win for the second time in a row and to become this year’s first repeat champion. Additionally, he received a $100,000 Dash-for-Cash prize for his 27th career triumph. After the race, which ended in overtime, Larson, who dominated the event and led five times for 132 laps, was furious right away.

After finishing in fourth position, Larson remarked, “I can’t go when my rear tires are off the ground.” “I did everything I thought I could, even though it looks like I choked another one away.” Mayer, right behind him, “just lagged back and slammed the shit out of me,” according to Larson. He restarted at the wrong moment, Mayer said. Mayer remarked, “I got to his (Larson’s) bumper a little too early.” He entered the box incredibly late. Just playing games. To gain the advantage at this level, you must do that. I was about to leave, so I wasn’t prepared for him to wait that long.
