Why is Martinsville Speedway Called ‘The Paperclip’?

The Tradition of the Grandfather Clock Trophy
Since 1964, winners at Martinsville Speedway have received a Grandfather Clock trophy, a tribute to the area’s long history of clockmaking. Ridgeway, Virginia, located nearby, is often referred to as the ‘Clock Capital of the World.’ Track owner H. Clay Earles introduced this tradition to make Martinsville’s trophy unique, commissioning the first one from the Ridgeway Clock Company. The original trophy, standing seven feet tall and made from hardwood, was awarded to Fred Lorenzen in September 1964. Production shifted to the Howard Miller Company of Michigan in 2004, but the tradition remains one of NASCAR’s most cherished. Many drivers eagerly anticipate adding a clock to their collection, often asking, “Where’s my clock?” after a win.
Memorable Moments at Martinsville
Martinsville Speedway has played host to many legendary NASCAR moments. In 2015, Jeff Gordon claimed his ninth victory at the track during his final full-time season. However, one of the most talked-about events occurred in 2022, when Ross Chastain executed a never-before-seen ‘wall ride’ maneuver. On the final lap, running in 10th place, Chastain intentionally steered his car into the outside wall in Turns 3 and 4, keeping the throttle wide open. This unconventional move propelled his car to a staggering 130 mph, allowing him to pass multiple competitors and finish in fifth place.
Chastain later reflected on the moment, recalling the fan reactions and the disbelief from those watching. He mentioned how his uncle had left the room before the final lap, assuming his race was over, only to rush back after hearing the commotion. Although the move was initially deemed legal, NASCAR later banned it to prevent similar tactics in the future.
Martinsville’s Place in the NASCAR Schedule
Martinsville Speedway hosts two Cup Series races annually—one in the spring and another in the fall during the playoffs. This season, the track will again play a key role in the championship battle, with the Truck, Xfinity, and Cup Series all making stops at ‘The Paperclip.’ A triple-header is also set for late March.
