Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette previously reported that the Steelers might turn back to Russell Wilson if financial negotiations with Rodgers hit a roadblock. Now, he states that Pittsburgh has officially extended an offer, and the team is waiting on Rodgers to make a decision.
It’s largely a matter of wording. Unless the Steelers presented a firm take-it-or-leave-it proposal, Rodgers still has the option to counter with a request for better financial terms.
Regardless, it’s hard to ignore how Rodgers—who recently seemed to be running out of opportunities—has once again made himself the center of attention.
Take, for example, the carefully timed or perhaps deliberately staged beach photos of Rodgers, possibly dressed in velvet, lost in deep thought. In just two weeks, he has gone from reportedly reaching out to the Giants for a chance to play to suddenly having multiple options on the table.
Whether it’s intentional or just part of his natural approach, Rodgers has managed to put himself in the spotlight once more—perhaps for the final time. The NFL world is watching, discussing, and speculating about his next move.
As long as Pittsburgh doesn’t pivot to another veteran quarterback, Rodgers has the luxury of taking his time. Eventually, though, the Steelers will need a definitive answer.
And when he finally responds, he’ll likely express frustration over all the attention his decision has generated—just as expected.
