NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson says he will return to racing in 2025.

NASCAR legend Jimmie Johnson aims to continue his legendary sports career until 2025. Johnson’s career is anything but legendary. He dominated the NASCAR landscape, winning seven championships from 2006 to 2016. After retiring from full-time NASCAR racing in 2020, Johnson sought a new challenge in IndyCar. A two-year stint in IndyCar with Chip Ganassi Racing confirmed his versatility on a variety of racing platforms, despite mixed results. Although he struggles to finish in the top 20, Johnson’s attachment to oval racing remains strong. When he returned to NASCAR as owner of Legacy Motor Club, he took on new challenges with confidence, including adding Toyota cars to the team.

The transition to the new generation cars has presented significant challenges, not only for Johnson but also for many experienced drivers. During his part-time stint in 2024, Johnson struggled to adapt to the new car model. Speaking about the season, he explained, as quoted by First Sportz:”Where you gain speed in this car for a long time. Take it easy, accelerate again first, that mentality worked really well with the old generation car. That’s not the case with this car. There’s a very different approach to corner entry and how you come out of the crash and control the car going into it and slowly get the hang of it.”Despite these obstacles, Johnson’s passion for the sport hasn’t waned. He remains involved in racing and is even considering a part-time return in 2025, though he will take on a media role with NBC Sports. When asked about a possible 2025 return, Johnson said:

“Yeah, I thought about that too. We strive to ensure that our team has no cost. 42 and 43 won’t hurt. It’s not over yet, but I’ll be there at least a few times. Johnson plans to make a big statement with the final race of the 2024 season in the season finale at Phoenix Raceway. Johnson also competes in Legacy Motor Club’s Extreme E Series. In 2024, he will also take over motorsports coverage for NBC Sports, meaning his influence extends beyond the track.
