Yoshinobu Yamamoto, a pitcher from Japan, had an amazing World Series debut by helping his team, the Los Angeles Dodgers, win 4-2 against the New York Yankees.
The Dodgers also delighted their fans at Dodger Stadium with three home runs and held off a late Yankees comeback. The National League champions now lead the best-of-seven series 2-0. Unlike the first game, both teams scored early in the game, with Tommy Edman hitting a home run for the Dodgers and Juan Soto hitting one for the Yankees.
However, the hosts then had their own turn to hit home runs in the third inning. Teoscar Hernandez and Freddie Freeman, who hit the game-winning home run on Friday, both hit home runs to give the Dodgers a 4-1 lead. Yamamoto, who signed a record-breaking $325m contract when he joined the Dodgers from Japan last December, pitched until the seventh inning and only allowed one hit, which was Soto’s homer.
The Yankees offense struggled, with their star batter Aaron Judge striking out three times and not getting any hits until they made a comeback in the ninth inning.
The visitors had one more chance to score when Soto got a base hit, moved to second on a wild pitch, and then was brought home by Giancarlo Stanton, making the score 4-2. Jazz Chisholm Jr hit a single, and Anthony Rizzo was hit by a pitch, loading the bases.
Unfortunately, Anthony Volpe struck out, and with only one out left, pinch-hitter Jose Trevino flew out to centre field. The Dodgers faced a bigger problem when Shohei Ohtani hurt his left shoulder while trying to steal a base in the seventh inning and had to leave the game.
The next game will take place in New York at Yankee Stadium on Monday night.
