A look at Chase Elliott’s stats for the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series season shows mixed signals. Elliott, meanwhile, has 30 top-20 finishes and an impressive 12.1 average. He has been one of the most consistent drivers in NASCAR this season. In just the 20th race of the season at Chicago, he finished worse than 19th. Elliott, on the other hand, has just one win, on April 14 at Texas Motor
Speedway, and has led just 295 laps. There were few signs that this was a championship-caliber campaign. His playoff performance was also abysmal. In eight playoff races to date, Elliott has posted three top-five finishes, including a runner-up finish behind teammate Kyle Larson in the night race at Bristol. But he also finished 18-under three times, including 33rd in Las Vegas, which put him in prime position to win the Four Way Championship.
For a long time on Sunday, it looked like Elliott and the No. 9 will get a much needed win at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Elliott completed 81 laps of the 400-mile race and appeared to have one of the best cars in the field. But Elliott’s dominating passion was quickly forgotten by most of the NASCAR world when Tyler Reddick crossed the top of the track on the final lap and passed Ryan Blaney and Denny Hamlin. The race as a whole was a perfect reflection of Elliott’s season. Consistent and reliable, but not good enough to beat the hottest NASCAR Cup teams. Elliott deserves credit for running a strong race even with the season remaining. Homestead had its best run since the aforementioned Texas race in April. But the less positive side of the story is that the ninth-ranked team has yet to post a winning game since the spring. Not a good thing when the playoffs are in full swing.
As the Cup Series heads to Martinsville for the final race of Round 8, the No. 9 will be looking to repeat his half-mile performance from November 2020, when Elliott claimed his fourth league finish before taking the championship. Phoenix. Being 43 points short of the cutoff isn’t ideal for Elliott, but at least he has some momentum behind the ninth-place team with Martinsville looming on the horizon.
