Legendary jockey leaves 18-carat gold trophies worth £400,000 in back of taxi – before heroic driver saves the day

The famed rider’s heart sank as he watched the car drive off with a trio of 18-carat gold Melbourne Cups – each worth £133,333 – sitting on the backseat.

Boss, 55, won the ‘race that stops a nation’ three times in a row from 2003 on the awesome Makybe Diva.

The all-conquering jockey retired in 2021 having won more than £90million in the saddle.

No race means more to Aussies than the Melbourne Cup, won this year by freak 90-1 outsider Knight’s Choice.

And Boss thought his cherished possessions had gone for good after somehow forgetting about them following a speaking engagement.

He was too slow to call the cab back.

But fortunately the driver, despite not having a clue about racing, clocked what was left in his car.

Sydney-based cabbie Gedy Hildid miraculously managed to track Boss down and return the treasured goods.

Boss said: “As you would understand, the Cups mean the world to me, and I was super grateful to get them back.”

While Hildid’s boss said: “It was such a wonderful story because the driver did not know what they were, he wasn’t familiar with racing and had no idea what he was returning.”

The two also posed for a brilliant photo, with Boss looking more than a little relieved to be holding his trophy again.
