After the Ciaron Maher-trained horse made his debut with a victory at Mornington, Shanwah may be headed to the Brisbane Winter Carnival. Shanwah won the Sportsbet Racing Form Plate (1600m) in his second start following a spell in his fifth race appearance on Wednesday. Shanwah, who was first prepared by Maher in Sydney, is currently located at Cranbourne for his current campaign, where assistant trainer Jack Turnbull claims that the horse has received a lot of work. Shanwah ($4.40), who was ridden by Blake Shinn, was one and a half lengths ahead of Belle Detelle ($15), the $1.50 favorite, and three and a half lengths behind third place finisher Ongatiti. “He was a costly yearling, bred to remain, and that was just a maiden, but we can raise his profile and most likely step up in trip, and long term, I’d say Brisbane will be his go,” Turnbull said.
He has been a slow burn, but it has been a while since he knew what to do. Although he has been a work in progress, he has potential. He visited Sydney, Bong Bong, and Cranbourne, where we confronted him.Since he’s been down here, he’s really acclimated and had a decent number of jump outs. It appears that we have a quality racehorse on our hands, especially for Kevin (Payne). He is one of our best supporters. He has a number of young horses coming through, including Estriella, and he hopes this one can continue. Turnbull claimed that although he was unaware of Shanwah’s immediate plans following Wednesday’s win, an increase in travel likely on the cards.
“You’d think naturally that would be a nice progression if there’s a little sneaky 1800-meter race at Sandown or Caulfield coming up,” Turnbull stated. Shanwah’s triumph impressed Shinn, particularly the way the gelding accelerated when he requested effort. Shinn stated, “He’s still a work in progress and a little quirky, but the more racing he does, the better he’s going to get.” His portions would have been sharp from that perspective, and I love how he actually quickened when I ripped him out. “He will run farther and there is a little more upside.”
