New York Liberty Retain Key Depth as They Gear Up for Title Defense

The New York Liberty wasted no time in shoring up their bench as WNBA free agency got underway, re-signing key reserve Kennedy Burke while making additional depth moves. Despite losing veteran guard Courtney Vandersloot to the Chicago Sky, the Liberty ensured continuity by keeping Burke, who played a crucial role during their championship run.

Kennedy Burke: A Valuable Bench Presence

Burke, an unrestricted free agent, chose to remain with the Liberty after a solid 2024 season. Playing in 38 games, she provided reliable minutes off the bench, averaging 3.4 points and 1.5 rebounds while shooting 40.9% from the field. Her ability to contribute on both ends made her a valuable piece in the Liberty’s rotation. With her return, she will likely continue playing a key reserve role as the Liberty aim to defend their first WNBA title in franchise history.

Depth Moves Strengthen Liberty Roster

In addition to Burke’s return, the Liberty brought in Esmery Martinez and Raquel Carrera on training camp contracts. Martinez, the No. 14 overall pick in the 2024 draft, and Carrera, selected 15th in 2021, will compete for final roster spots. The Liberty also retained Jaylyn Sherrod, who accepted a qualifying offer before free agency began.

Rebekah Gardner was another notable returnee. Acquired from the Sky before the 2024 season, she missed the entire year due to an Achilles injury suffered overseas. Now on a training camp contract, Gardner will look to reclaim her place in the league after showing promise as a rookie in 2022.

Outlook for 2025

While the loss of Vandersloot is significant, the Liberty’s focus on retaining and developing their bench players suggests confidence in their core. Burke’s return stabilizes the second unit, while the training camp additions provide competition and potential upside. With their stars still in place, New York remains a serious contender as they prepare for their title defense in 2025.
