JGR Star Christopher Bell Breaks Down the Challenges of Passing in NASCAR’s Mexico Cup Race

As part of this year’s Cup Series schedule, Christopher Bell recently discussed his opinions on NASCAR’s next race in Mexico City. The Cup and Xfinity Series will both compete at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez during the event, which is scheduled for the second week of June. This will be a major international stop in the 2025 season. Christopher Bell is a full-time competitor in the NASCAR Cup Series, driving the #20 Toyota Camry XSE for Joe Gibbs Racing. His career began in the Truck Series, where he claimed the 2017 championship before transferring to JGR’s Xfinity Series program in 2018. Bell was given the chance to compete in the 2020 Cup Series with Leavine Family Racing as a result of his outstanding performance. He made a comeback to JGR the following year, competing at the top level of NASCAR.

NASCAR insider Bozi Tatarevic made an X (formerly Twitter) post on Wednesday in which the #20 driver gave his thoughts on how the race would proceed in terms of passing other drivers. “The Stadium portion has me giddy with anticipation. There is always a chance to try to outrun someone and make a last-minute move when the race is nearing its conclusion. It will be interesting to observe how the draft impacts us, especially given how long the front straightaway is. I’m not sure if we’ve visited a track with a straightaway that could enable a pass into Turn 1 and possibly earn a draft run,” Bell remarked. “It has a combination of everything and I think that’s going to provide, an amazing show. And definitely the best driver, the best team should show up to the top with the diversity in the track,” he added.”

Last Sunday, Christopher Bell won the Ambetter Health 400 at Atlanta Motor Speedway, securing his place in the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series playoffs. The Oklahoma native may concentrate on improving his performance and gaining momentum for a more robust postseason run by securing a victory early in the season. “It’s the right call,” says Christopher Bell, defending NASCAR’s Atlanta decision. In a spectacular overtime finish in the Ambetter Health 400, Josh Berry, after leading 56 laps, was trapped in a tight squeeze between Denny Hamlin and Ross Chastain, pushing him into the wall and sparking off a multi-car disaster. In contrast to the NXS race the night before, NASCAR promptly issued the caution, as Christopher Bell, Carson Hocevar, and Kyle Larson went three-wide for the lead.

The decision to throw the caution flag out benefitted Bell as he was narrowly leading the pack. Recently, the JGR driver shared his thoughts on the decision by NASCAR. (via PRN on X) “We’ve been down this road before and I myself got crucified at Talladega a couple years ago because they wrecked and I was able to avoid the wreck and I advanced positions and they’re like, ‘OK, well for now on, whenever the cars wreck on the last lap, the yellow is coming out so that we don’t endanger people, and I think it’s the right call,” Bell said (0:08 onwards) Meanwhile, the Cup Series will head to the Circuit of The Americas for the EchoPark Automotive Grand Prix on Sunday.
